Fudayl ibn ‘Eyyaad and The Elderly Man

In the name of Allah (The One). I send peace and blessings upon His Messenger (Al-Mustafa) and upon His Messenger’s family, companions, and those who follow him in righteousness until the Day of Judgement (Yowm Al-Qiyaamah).

One day Fudayl ibn ‘Eyyad (d. 187 AH) passed by an elderly man and said to him, “How old are you?” “Sixty years”,  The man replied. Fudayl said to him, “For sixty years you’ve been been going to your Lord scared to reach Him.” “Enna lillahi wa enna ilayhi raji’oon — Verily, from Allah we come and to Him we return”, said the man. Fudayl then asked, “Do  you know the explanation of what you said? Allah has a slave that will return to him. Therefore, whoever knows that Allah has a slave and that to Him he shall return, then he must know he’s waiting. And whoever knows he’s waiting, then he must know he’ll be questioned. And whoever knows he’ll be question, then prepare for the question with an answer.” The elderly man asked, “So what’s the solution?” Fudayl responded, “It’s easy!” The man persisted on and asked, “What is it?!” Fudayl said, “Make good of what is left for you so that Allah will forgive you of what passed. For indeed, if you transgress in what you have remaining then you’ll get what passed and what’s left.”

May Allah make us from those who benefit from their time and constantly implore Allah’s forgiveness for the transgression we’ve committed.

And I send peace and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

The Misdirected Focus of ‘Aqeedah

In the name of Allah (The One). I send peace and blessings upon His Messenger (Al-Mustafa) and upon His Messenger’s family, companions, and those who follow him in righteousness until the Day of Judgement (Yowm Al-Qiyaamah).

From the apparent things that have caused a weakness in ‘Aqeedah in our present time is a lack of importance given to it by many of the du’aat (callers). The Du’aat call to Islam, but what Islam are they calling to?! They don’t call to ‘Aqeedah, but they call to Salah, Sadaqah (charity), Amaanah (trustworthiness), and righteous actions; but ‘Aqeedah, they don’t pay it any attention. So how can da’wah be upheld this way? Those people aren’t callers to Islam in the correct meaning, because true callers to Islam show importance to the foundation of Islam, its origin, and its power — ‘Aqeedah.

Like that, you don’t find calling the people to Towheed (the oneness of Allah) in their syllabi, not in mention nor giving it attention. This is from the things that has caused the weakness. Rather, most of them don’t truly know Towheed with a correct understanding. That’s because they haven’t learned or studied the foundations of calling to Islam. They don’t even know the foundation of calling to Islam, nor its origin.

If you find mention of it in their syllabi, it’s done so weakly. It doesn’t figuratively fill them up and they remain hungry. They don’t go into detail, clarify, nor grant it attention. And even when they do make space for ‘Aqeedah, then usually they don’t grant it much attention. Their goal is to speak to the students, glorify Islam, praise the religion, praise whatever group or party without paying attention to ‘Aqeedah. They don’t understand it and they don’t know it. What’s important is that the student passes, even if he’s weak, and their overall goal is not for them to have firm understanding of ‘Aqeedah.

So what is obligatory upon the du’aat, and may Allah grant them success, is to learn ‘Aqeedah first, give it attention, and understand it. Also, look at the condition of Islam today and what has taken place due to a deficiency in ‘Aqeedah. Then, begin with correcting it before anything else.

[TN] One may think we shouldn’t be scared of the Muslims falling into Shirk (associating partner with Allah), but let’s not forget the Hadeeth of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) wherein he said, “Indeed the thing I fear for you the most is the minor shirk (associating partners with Allah).” [Ahmad] To keep things in context, lets analyses who he was talking to — his companions (may Allah be pleased with them). After the Prophets, they were the best men to walk the face of this earth. So, if Al-Mustafa was scared of them falling into Shirk, rather it was the GREATEST thing he was scared of for them, and we’re 1434 years removed from them, then I think we should DEFINITELY be scared of the Muslims falling into it.

May Allah grant us a strong understanding of ‘Aqeedah and make us firm upon it with righteous actins!

And I send peace and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

The story of Khubayb ibn ‘Ade and how he kept his faith in the face of death!

In the name of Allah (The One). I send peace and blessings upon His Messenger (Al-Mustafa) and upon His Messenger’s family, companions, and those who follow him in righteousness until the Day of Judgement (Yowm Al-Qiyaamah).

Four months after the Battle of Uhud the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) sent 10 people to a place called Rajee’ to spread Islam. Upon arrival, a tribe surrounded them and killed them, all but two — Khubayb ibn ‘Ade and Zayd Ad-Dathenah. They were sold off in Makkah as slaves due to those they killed from the non-Muslims of Quraysh in the battle of Badr.

Zayd was bought and later killed by his owner. Khubayb was imprisoned. Then they gathered to kill him and took him to Tan’eem (the closet place outside of the boundary of Makkah). Khubayb sought permission to pray two raka’ah and they allowed it. After finishing his prayer, he said to them a piece poetry which is summarized to mean: “If I die a Muslim, then I don’t care however I’m killed. And that is because it is the will of God, he will bless me if I arrive cripple and torn up.”

Once Abu Sufyaan heard this he said to Khubayb, “Would it make you happy if Muhammad was here with us, we were about to kill him, and you were with your family?” Khubayb replied, “I swear by Allah, I wouldn’t be happy if Muhammad was in the place he is now and a thorn was bothering him.” Then he was killed.

May Allah increase us all in faith when faced with difficulties!

And I send peace and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

How does one make his intention sincere in seeking knowledge?

In the name of Allah (The One). I send peace and blessings upon His Messenger (Al-Mustafa) and upon His Messenger’s family, companions, and those who follow him in righteousness until the Day of Judgement (Yowm Al-Qiyaamah).

If someone were to ask, “How does one make his intention sincere in seeking knowledge?” Then it would be a few affairs:

Firstly, by making your intention following the command of Allah; because Allah ta’ala (the exalted) commanded that when he said,

“So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah” [Surah Muhammad (47) : 19].

Allah subhaanahu wa ta’ala (praise Him the exalted) urges knowledge, and if Allah urges something then it necessitates that He loves it and it pleases Him.

Secondly, by making your intention to preserve the Shari’ah of Allah. Preserving Allah’s Shari’ah is by way of education, memorization, and writing books.

Thirdly, making you intention to protect the Shari’ah of Allah and defending it. If it wasn’t for the scholars, then the Shari’ah wouldn’t have been preserved and no one would have defended it. For this reason, we find Shaykh Al-Islam (and other than him from the people of knowledge) repelled the people of innovation — clarifying the misguidance of their innovation — and we find that they achieve a lot of good.

Fourthly, by making your intention to follow the Sunnah of Shari’ah of Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). It is not possible to follow his Shari’ah until you learn this Shari’ah.
